Travemünde
Summer Beach

Summertime in Travemünde ...
That means miles of beaches on both sides of the river Trave, that means beach-chairs, white sails on the blue Baltic Sea, yellow rubber dinghies and snow-white bay-steamers. It also means "Bungee-Jumping" and the "Fontänenfeld" (literally: field of fountains) -attractions (not only) for children. And it means "Travemünder Fahnenmeer", a new idea on its way to become a tradition.

"Travemünde Sea of Flags"
"Travemünder Fahnenmeer" will be created each year between June and September. It will be given a new Theme every year: 2006 these flags gave impressions of participating countries of the World Football Championship. 2007 the theme was the Afrika-Campaign of UNICEF, since in that year Lübeck has been UNICEF's German partner-town.

Travemünde - so much to discover ...
You can watch ferries an freighters passing by on river Trave - just a few meters from you, while you are sitting in a café or restaurant. In summertime you may also see some cruise-liners like the "Deutschland", in Germany well known as "Traumschiff" (literally: "Ship of Dreams"), being both, title and theatre of a popular TV-show. By the end of August you may see windjammers and other traditional tall ships, attending the "Baltic Sail". And one of the famous "Flying P-Liners", the "Passat", is riding at anchor at Travemünde as a museum-ship.

Sports in and around Travemünde:
At the end of July each year the "Travemünder Woche" is a highlight of the summer-season. Aproximatly 3.000 sailors compete in many boat-races on the Bay of Lübeck. Ashore spectatores and visitors by thousands celebrate a week of sports and party. Some of the races can be watched from the beach.

Besides sailing there are opportunities to play or learn Golf or Tennis. In Mai the traditional "Travemünder Stadtlauf" takes place, in June the "Travemünde Handball Beach Cup" and in August Germany's largest Boule-tournament (Holstentor-Boule-Tournier). And, of course, our guests can be getting active as well: Throughout the whole summer various sport-courses will be held daily in Travemünde, and Travemünde's surrounding is an attractive walking-area not only in summer.

In and around Travemünde:
Travemünde's guests will not need their cars. Most places in and araound Travemünde can be reached on foot or by bike.

Bicycles are the ideal vehicle to explore Travemünde's surrounding, even if one is not a trained cyclist. From Travemünde to Niendorf via the cliffs of Brodten it is only 6 kilometers. A tour arround Lake Hemmelsdorf, Germany's lowest region with a beautiful nature reserve, an ornithological zoo and nice restaurants along the way, is hardly longer than 15 kilometers.
The old hanseatic town of Lübeck with its famous five churches and seven steeples offers an overwhelming variety of museums and exhibitions, including the famous Buddenbrook-house, a Günter-Grass-museum and the new Willy-Brandt-museum. The city of Lübeck can be reached by bus, train and ship (and by car, of course). Lübeck's old town is located on an island between river Trave and river Wakenitz and its old streets are a shopper's paradise while its small backyards are a true oasis of silence.
